Usually when someone wants to know how to increase their metabolism, what they are really asking is “how can I get my body to burn more fat?” This article will answer both of those questions. But the first question we need to answer is, “What is metabolism?”
Your metabolism is the sum total of all of your body’s processes. Each of the trillion plus cells in your body is busy 24 hours a day. They are doing the work that they need to do to stay alive, and keep you alive. And they all consume energy. All 1 trillion of them. The sum total of their energy consumption and the rate at which they consume it is your metabolism.
Metabolism responds to stimulus. For purposes of our discussion today, we will limit what we mean by stimulus to what we eat and our activity level. The ability of the metabolism to shift is referred to as Metabolic Flux.
In order to safely and effectively increase metabolism, we need to increase the sum total of the energy consumed by your body as well as the sum total of energy released. We do this by increasing the amount of nutrient dense calories while proportionately increasing our activity levels.
It is very important to understand that we need to eat healthy, whole, unprocessed, nutrient dense foods. Simply increasing calories will not be effective at increase metabolism.
We also need to exercise and stimulate muscle tissue. During resistance training, muscle tissue is broken down. The key to this is that it is the recovery process that burns energy. So we need to stimulate the need for recovery through intensive training.
I don’t mean olympic style training. I just mean 20 minutes a day of hard physical work. Just enough to stimulate the body. If you are unsure of what to do in a gym, find a good personal trainer. And I specify good. Not all trainers are created equal. So find someone who you feel good about who has what you want and knows how to get there naturally and safely.
The time during which we work out is not when results are achieved. Our workout is when results are initiated. The achievement of those results occurs during the following recovery process. But ONLY if we are feeding our body what it needs.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose weight, burn fat, or gain muscle, is they don’t eat enough. And under eating is a killer when you are trying to raise your metabolism. If your body thinks there isn’t enough food around, it will move into starvation mode and conserve every fat calorie it possibly can.
In summary: Increase your activity level and increase your intake of nutrient dense foods. The more active you are, the more you need to eat. Just make sure it’s healthy food that you are eating.Share
